Castle Hill and the Victoria Tower

Dominating the landscape for miles around, the Victoria Tower perched on top of Castle Hill offers 360 degree views over the whole of Huddersfield. A well-known local landmark, the tower was completed in 1899 to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Queen Victoria's reign. Castle Hill itself is an ancient monument reaching a height of almost 1,000 feet above sea level. Steeped in history, human activity on Castle Hill goes back 4,000 years. Originally an Iron Age hillfort surrounded by defensive ditches and ramparts, it was later a medieval castle and the site of a medieval village. Castle Hill is a popular spot with walkers, fell runners and kite flyers owing to its unrivalled views across the valleys and hills around Huddersfield. Regular events take place at Castle Hill including tours of the site and its archaeology, nature walks, bird watching and bat walks.
