Rated one of the top five things to do in West Yorkshire, the National Coal Mining Museum allows you to explore England’s last deep coal mine. Follow in the footsteps of the miners who worked the pit and take a tour of the mine – 140m underground! Experience the conditions the miners worked in and the tools they used. You’ll hear stories from the coalface from former miners who worked down the pit and the history of the industry, its dangers and hardships. The knowledgeable and friendly guides really bring the history of the place to life. On the surface, there’s an adventure playground for children and woodland to explore. You can even visit the pit ponies in their stables. At the Hope Pit, there are hands-on interactive models, touch screen displays and virtual guides. Regular events at the museum include science experiments, blacksmith demos, living history performances and nature trails.
