Kirklees Light Railway

The popular Kirklees Light Railway opened in 1991 and recaptures the great days of the area’s steam-powered industrial past. Travel in style in one of the six steam locomotives pulling unique hand painted carriages along 3.5 miles of track. Sit back, relax and enjoy the glorious views as you steam through the South Pennine foothills

Children will enjoy the train-themed play areas at both the Clayton West and Shelley stations and a miniature railway chugs around the duck pond at Clayton West. Cafes and picnic sites are on hand for refreshments or treat yourself to an indulgent Afternoon Tea & Steam Experience whilst on the train.

The railway hosts a full programme of events throughout the year. Kids will love the Thomas the Tank day, while a Cocktail Express or Mexican theme night might be more to your taste? Look out for discount days for local residents and seasonal events such as the Easter Eggpress, Halloween Ghost Trains and Christmas Santa Special.
