Hello Huddersfield-Escape Anthology

Give us your ideas and we’ll write you a story, poem or letter!

Members of Holmfirth Writers’ Group are inviting visitors to call in at their ‘Story Shed’, outside the Parish Church, on Saturday 18th September between 12 noon and 4pm and present them with inspiration and ideas for personal pieces of writing.

The event is part of this year’s Holmfirth Arts Festivaland the writers’ group have employed Percival the Mechanical Pigeon to whisk your words over to a secret location where members of Holmfirth Writers’ Group will turn your ideas into a poem, letter or short story.  Rest assured Percival will receive peanuts for his contribution!

You may want them to write about your favourite animal or your least favourite food. Perhaps you’d like a sunshine poem for someone who’s poorly, a thank you letter to a friend or an adventure story for a child.  The finished piece of writing will arrive back at the ‘Story Shed’ an hour later to be specially performed for the recipient.

On Sunday 19th September the group will be doing readings from its latest anthology ‘Escape: Writing from Lockdown.’  During Lockdown, writing was a real liberation for  members of the group, and this new anthology is the result of that escape. Some of the work included is specifically focussed on the experience of Lockdown but much of it, although written during this period, is concerned with other issues, such as love, memories and the natural environment.  Members of the group will read a selection of their work at The Tech in Holmfirth from 3pm-5pm and refreshments will be available. The event is freebut booking in advance is advisable as numbers are restricted – go to www.holmfirthartsfestival.co.uk. Copies of the anthology will be available at the event and on sale at ‘Read’ and ‘Oxfam’ bookshops in Holmfirth.

Member of the group, Sally Brown, said:

“It’s been really strange not to be able to meet face to face for over 18 months now, but many of the group have continued to get together on Zoom and we have all continued writing at home.

“We thought it would be a good idea to bring all that writing together under one roof and release a new anthology for people to enjoy.”

The Holmfirth Arts Festival brochure is available from Holmfirth Library and other public information points – or go to www.holmfirthartsfestival.co.uk for further information.
