Christmas Covid restrictions:
What are the rules for people in Huddersfield?

For most people in Huddersfield and elsewhere Christmas will be a very different experience this year as the fight against the spread of Covid-19 continues. However, for a five-day period Government coronavirus restrictions are being eased to allow people to mix with a limited circle of family and friends and celebrate the festive season.

Across the UK, people will be able to form “bubbles” of three households for five days between 23rd and 27th December. Who can be in your bubble will depend on where you are.

Who am I allowed to see?

From 23 to 27 December, the three households in a “Christmas bubble” will be allowed to meet each other in each other’s homes, at a place of worship, in an outdoor public space or a garden.

Bubbles are fixed, so you will not be able to mix with two households on Christmas Day and two different ones on Boxing Day. And households in your Christmas bubble can’t bubble with anyone else.

Exceptions to this includes anyone self-isolating, has tested positive, or develops coronavirus symptoms up to 48 hours after the Christmas bubble last met. These should not join a Christmas bubble. If someone tests positive, or develops coronavirus symptoms up to 48 hours after the Christmas bubble last met, everyone will have to self-isolate.

Where am I allowed to travel?

Travel restrictions will be lifted, meaning people from Huddersfield will be able to visit their families anywhere in the UK and allowing families from elsewhere visit families in Huddersfield.

What are the rules for going to the pub or a restaurant?

Hospitality settings, such as pubs, restaurants and entertainment venues will remain closed in line with the current Tier system restrictions. Places you can meet friends and family include parks, beaches, open countryside, public gardens, allotments and playgrounds.

What are the rules for New Year’s Eve?

At the moment there are no plans to extend the relaxation of restrictions to cover New Year’s Eve. Current tier system rules will apply.

What are the rules for children and students?

Children aged under 18 whose parents live apart are allowed to be part of two separate Christmas bubbles. This means they can see both parents without being counted as part of another household.

University students may return to their parents in the early December “travel window” and be counted as part of their household straight away.

But if parents have three or more grown-up children who are not at university, then they cannot all form a Christmas bubble with their parents.

Individual households can split for Christmas. So, if three people are sharing a home, they can all go and form separate Christmas bubbles with their families and come back to form a single household again afterwards.

Can I see family members in care homes?

Care home residents have been told not to join Christmas bubbles and visits out of the home are being limited to residents who are of “working age”. The Government has asked anyone looking to visit family currently in care homes to consider whether visiting at the care home would “provide meaningful contact in a safer way”. Residents who do leave care homes will be tested and asked to self isolate when they return.
